Coastal materials
Marine-grade stainless fixings, coastal-rated brackets and UV-stable capped boards cost more than standard versions. On the coast, we think they're essential, because cheaper fixings rust and cheaper boards fade, and the deck needs replacing sooner.
Boards
Softwood is cheapest to buy but we rarely recommend it near the sea. Capped composite and dense hardwood cost more but last much longer in salt air.
Height and wind
Raised decks need taller posts, deeper beams and bracing. On exposed sites we add extra bracing and stronger fixings for balustrades, particularly glass.
Finishing
Steps, balustrades, screens, fascias and lighting are listed separately so you can see the cost of each.
Access and ground
Saltburn's terraces and Coatham's yards often have no side access. Sandy or rubble-filled ground can need extra preparation.
FAQs
Do coastal-grade fixings cost more?
Yes, stainless fixings and coastal brackets cost more than plated ones. They're a small part of the overall price and prevent rust and early failure.
Why do you price each job rather than by square metre?
Because height, exposure, access and finishing change the cost so much that a square-metre rate would be misleading. A quote after a visit is accurate.
